OK. I've managed to use my computer as a web hosting thing by using IIS, but if i save a web page and try and edit it later, it puts all my soue code into a list and doesn't do anything or let me change anything. Does anyone know what settings I need to change to fix this annoying problem? Also, how do I register a domain name to it so other people can see my site when it's done? Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.
I'd recommend that you not use that program. Lycos offers a brtter solution. I use it. It's called Angelfire. angelfire is great for everyone--both novice and advanced users, as the novice can use the builder, and the advanced can write their own code an FTP it. If I write code, I do it in notepad, as i've noticed other programs to insert their own coding that should not be there. You can get an account with them and pay between eight to fifteen dolllers a month. that account includes a domain, as well as bandwidth and disk space. I host all my sites on there and love it. The address is www.lycos.com When you get to the site, just click the link at the top that says "Angelfire" and from there, you can sign up. If you have any more questions, please ask.
OK. I tried using Microsoft Front Page a year or so ago when I knew nothing about HTML coding, but it was putting stuff in all the wrong places. When I learned a bit about coding I realized it was putting a load of extra stuff in as you said, that I didn't even want or need.
Well I've sorted out the web host thing now, bbut there must be a setting I've got to change on my own computer because I still can't edit my web pages after I've saved them. Any ideas?
I! Am! An! Idiot!! No wonder it wouldn't work. My source code was being displayed in stupid microsoft word rather than Notepad! Gurr'rr'rr'rr'rr'rr'rr??? Just had to go into internet options to change it. It works now anyway. Does anyone else have any ideas about how to get a domain name of my own? Thanks.
if you don't mind prepaying for a year or so you can get domain at really low rates with hosting and pretty much unlimited storage or bandwith . the best price i found so far is www.powweb.com I don't know if their site builder is accessible but if you are writing your own code and uploading it then that shouldn't be an issue. I have heard word press is somewhat accessible as well but you would end up with a www.yourdomain.wordpress.com domain so that may not work for you.
Are these all based in the US? I've been looking around and haven't found many accessible ones based in the UK.
Yeah, I've got a sighted friend with his own server. He's looking for a good place to get a domain too. He wants to make a website with it's own name, not with something like angelfire.com in front of it. I'll be sure to tell him about this site. He sais he's finding ones that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, unless the thousands refers to the server itself.
Just to make something clear, you can be in the uk and still by hosting in the us - I do so my self.
In regards to domains, in the uk, I like heartinternet.com. If your after a .co.uk its around £6 for 2 years, plus they'll include some very basic webhosting with it.
